In 1876, an Englishman brought back some grey squirrels from America.
The result has been devastating. They competeted with the red squirrels for food and as some believe, carried a disease that decimated the reds.There are 2.5 millions grey squirrels in the UK and just 161,000 reds. In France the proportion is similar. In the same way, crayfish was brought from foreign countries (America, Asia) to supply English or french restaurants. Most of the native crayfishes have now disappeared.
